• This shows how to make realistic, metallic bolts with rust around the edges. Perfect for the industrial theme. Goes great with a brushed metal background.

1

a. New file, this size.

b. Fill the background with white and then make a new layer

c. Name the layer "Bolt Shape"

d. Next turn the grid on View>Show>Grid or Ctrl + '

e. Go into the settings Edit>Preferences>Guides, Grid & Slices... or Ctrl + K then Ctrl + 6.

f. Change it to a Gridline every 1 inch with 4 subdivisions.

a. Now take the select the Polygon Tool. Make sure the settings are like this. Place a bolt 1/2 an inch wide 1/4 an inch from the side. It should look like that.

b. Now select the Move Tool (U). Now make 4 copies of your Bolt Shape Layer. Move one to each corner and rotate each of them a little differently until you have something that looks like this.

c. Now rasterize the Bolt Shape layers and merge them into one layer. Rename if the name has changed during the merging. Rename this layer Bolt Shapes.

a. Hold Ctrl and click on the Bolt Shapes layer this should give you a selection in the shape of those bolts. Now click on the Channels Tab in the layers pallet and click on the button that says "Create a new channel" when you hold the mouse over it.

b. When you do that your work area should turn black. Now do a 5 pixel wide stroke inside of your selection. Edit>Stroke...

c. Next, making sure you still have the same shape selected, go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Spatter...

use these settings:

-Spray Radius: 5

-Smoothness: 6

What you get should look like this.

 

a. Now it gets a little tricky. I want to use the textures from the Rust Tutorial I did. If you haven't done that tutorial you can use these images.

b. Have a layer with the orangish rust on it named Orange Rust

c. Have another layer with the monotone rust on it named Black Rust

a. Follow closely here because this is tricky. Hold ctrl and click on the Alpha 1 channel. Now click on the Orange Rust layer. Copy and Paste. (Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste). When you paste it should make a new layer, name this layer Rust Outline.

b. Now hold ctrl and click on the Bolt Shape layer. Now click on the Black Rust layer. Copy and Paste. (Edit>Copy, Edit>Paste). When you paste it should make a new layer, name this layer Black Bolt .

c. Put the Rust Outline over the Black Bolt layer and merge them together (Ctrl + E)

d. Next apply these layer styles Layer>Layer Style>
