Most lighting done on objects is done with Layer Styles. This tutorial uses Lighting Effects to cast shadows in more than one direction on text or any other object you might want to light. |
- Start by making a opening a new file. These are the specs I used. |
-Fill the background with black and on a new layer create your text. (To fill: hit Alt + Backspace for your primary color and Ctrl + Backspace for your secondary color. If you want to do it the slow way Edit>Fill)
-Hold ctrl and click on your text layer in the layers pallet.
-Click on the channels tab in the layers pallet and find the button at the bottom that says "Save Selection as Channel" when you hold the mouse over it. A new channel should appear named "Alpha 1"
-With the text still selected do a Gaussian blur (Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur) on your new channel. With these settings.
-Go back to the layers pallet by clicking on the layers tab in the channels pallet. Create a new layer and fill it with a medium grey. (To fill: hit Alt + Backspace for your primary color and Ctrl + Backspace for your secondary color. If you want to do it the slow way Edit>Fill)
-On the new grey layer you just made go to Filter>Render>Lighting Effects. Use these settings.
-You can move the light around if you want, this is the part that seperates this tutorial from other chrome tutorials. You might want to think about where you would want a light source. Left to right or from the bottom or even from the center out.

-The top image is what the grey layer will look like after you do the Lighting Effects.
-Hold Ctrl and click on the orignal text layer to select it. Then making sure the grey layer is selected invert the selection and hit clear it. Then Deselect This is what it should look like when you are done.

-Next on the layer you just cut out. Go to Image>Adjustments>Curves, or ctrl +M. Then adjust it to these settings. |

-Finally add the Layer Styles Bevel and Emboss and Inner Glow to these settings. |
-Your final image should look something like this. Add something that looks like a lightsource to really show off the effect.
