Learn how to make this cool lava vortex technique I used in my anger design.

 

 

 

1

a. Start with a 400x400 px file, 72 ppi, rbg color.

b. Go to Edit>Preferences>Guides, Grid and Slices...

and use these settings:

Gridline every: 100 pixels

Subidivisions: 4

c. Hit D to reset your colors to black and white, then hit Alt + Backspace to fill your background layer with black.

d. Hit Ctrl + ' to toggle the grid.

 

 

 

2.

a. Click on the Channels Tab in the layers pallete to switch over to the Channels Palette.

b. Click on the New Channel Button:

c. Using the Rectangular Marquee tool to select the right half of the image, use the grid to make sure your selection is exact.

d. Hit Ctrl + Backspace to fill the selection with white. Then hit Ctrl + D to deselect.

a. Go to Filter>Stylize>Wind...

use these settings:

Method: Wind

Direction: From the Right.

b. After you hit ok hit Ctrl + F twice to repeat the filter.

a. Go to Image>Rotate>Rotate Canvas 90 degrees CCW.

a. Go to Filter>Distort>Polar Coordinates...

use these settings:

Rectangular to Polar: Checked

a. Go to Filter>Distort>Twirl...

use these settings:

Angle: 150

b. Go to Filter>Brush Strokes>Spatter...

use these settings:

Spray Radius: 15

Smoothness: 13

c. Go to Filter>Distort> Ocean Ripple...

use these settings:

Ripple Size: 11

Ripple Magnitude: 5

d. Hold Ctrl and click on the Alpha 1 layer to load its selection.

a. Go back to the Layers Pallete, pick out a pure red color from the color picker, then make a new layer.

b. Fill the selection with the red you chose by hitting Alt + Backspace

c. Hit D to reset your colors then make a new layer, this time when you hit Alt + Backspace it will fill the selection with black.

a. Make sure you are still on the layer you filled with black, and select the Move Tool.

b. In the top left corner there is an option that says "Show Bounding Box" make sure this is Checked.

c. Using the move tool shrink the black layer (Make sure you hold shift so the proportions are constrained) and rotate it 45 degrees.

d. Then hit Ctrl + E to merge the two layers together.

 

 

9

a. Make a copy of the newly merged layer and shrink and rotate it. Just like you did in the previous step.

b. Make several copies of this layer and make them bigger and smaller, and remember too rotate them too. Also make sure the layers are in order from smallest on top to largest on bottom.

c. You should eventually end up with something similar to this.
