Learn how to make this reflective tentacle effect. Also a good example of how to use the glass filter and displacement maps.

a. Start out with a 6 x 1.5 inch canvas. RGB color and 72 ppi.

b. Fill your background layer with white, then make a new layer to work on

a. Make some text using a bold font. It will work best if it stretches most of the way across the canvas and is fairly thick.

b. Make the text a medium grey color.

a. Apply this layer style to the text layer

a. Make a new layer and position it below the text layer.

b. With the text layer selected go to Layer>Merge Down... or hit Ctrl + E.

c. After you merge down go to Image>Adjustments>Curves... and adjust it to these settings:

a. Apply these layer styles to the text.

a.If you haven't worked with gradients much in the past you will probably need to load a couple of gradient presets into your gradient library.

b. To do this go to Edit>Preset Manager...

c. Choose Gradients from the dropdown menu, then hit the load button. You will get a file browser window, load the Special Effects presets.

d. Hold Ctrl and click on the text layer to load its selection.

e. Click on the "Create new fill or adjustment layer" button on the layers pallete:

and select Gradient map from the menu that appears.

 

f. Click on the dropdown arrow next to the gradient and select this gradient from the box that pops up. Before you hit ok make sure the reverse option is checked.

 

-Your text should now look like this. We are done with editing it, so to save space in the layers palette go to Layer>Merge Visible or hit Ctrl + Shift + E.
