a. Go to Select>All or hit Ctrl + A to select the canvas. Then hit Ctrl + C to copy.

b. Next click on the Channels Tab and then hit the New Channel Button at the bottom right of the Channels Palette.

c. Then hit Ctrl + V to Paste.

a. Click on the flyout menu in the top right corner and select Duplicate Channel from the menu that comes up.

b. Fill out the box that comes up like this:

c. When you hit ok a new file will open, save this somewhere. It doesn't matter where you save it, but remember where you do it, you have to navigate to it later. Then go back to your other file.

a. Now go back and make a new text layer.

b. Pick out some text, or a logo you want to put on the flag. I chose a lambda and the text "Half-Life". Make sure the text, or whatever you pick out is black.

a. Now go to Filter>Distort>Displace...
use these settings:

b. Hit ok then navigate to the Map.psd that you saved earlier

a.Now change the opacity of the text layer to about 43%.

b. You can go to Image>Adjustments>Hue/Saturation... or hit Ctrl + U and mess around with the color of the cloth layer if you want.
